Phil uses coaching to dial-in his social mindset and have more fun

Case Study Summary

Phil, a software engineer, came to coaching wanting to improve his public speaking skills and feel more confident in both professional and personal conversations.

He realized that while technical skills are important, social skills are what truly drive connection and success. The biggest shift for Phil was a mindset one—learning to relax, lower the pressure he put on himself, and trust the tools he’d gained.

Whether he’s speaking up in meetings or chatting with a barista, conversations now feel smoother, easier, and, most importantly, more enjoyable. Phil describes coaching as a lifelong investment that continues to pay off in every area of his life.

Hey Phil, so thanks for hopping on and doing a case study with me. Just to kick things off here, tell us who you are and what you do.

My name is Phil. I'm a software engineer, and I just really wanted to learn more about like public speaking, especially in like the work area, but also like in my personal relationships as well.

When you first entered coaching, what was the biggest reason that you wanted coaching? What did you hope to learn?

Yeah, so I mentioned that a little bit, but really the biggest thing was when it comes to like pretty much anything in life, right? Whether it's like work or personal relationships, things like that, it really pretty much all comes down to social skills, right? At work, you can have like really great technical skills, but if your social skills are lacking, then you're not gonna get very far, or at least it's not gonna be as enjoyable of an experience or as fruitful of an experience. So that was the biggest reason I wanted to start coaching.

What would you say the most important thing you have learned with coaching is?

For me, I think really is less of like, "these are the steps" or "these are the things you can do to be successful in these situations". It's more of what's the mindset you have when approaching these situations which was really surprising to me, but it really turned my perspective around.

Mindset is so important because if you get that dialed in, everything else becomes way easier and all the frameworks that you learn with coaching, they can actually stick. So if you would talk a little bit about how is life different after coaching? What sort of wins can you share?

Continuing with the mindset thing, it's there's like less attention or like very high, like standard when it comes to when I'm in meetings at work or just shop talking to the barista, right? And I think that's because of like the sort of mindset thing you kind of realize that you can just relax and use the skills I learned in this course. That's honestly like the best thing you can do to have conversations flow smoothly or have like a meeting be like very effective. That makes sense.

I talk about time and again with my clients of sort of lowering the conversational bar where you don't have to, whatever you say, like it doesn't have to be like the perfect thing that's gonna like make people weep 'cause it's so beautiful. It's like, no. Be relevant and that is really the best you can do is speak up because people wanna hear from you. So many of my clients when they start, first start working with me, they go in with that high bar and that makes it really tough. Like I always tell clients like, hey, we need to put that bar on the ground so you can step over it every single time. And so it sounds like that was aha moment for you as well.

Yeah, things are a bit more relaxed, a bit more fun I'd say.

I love it. What would you tell someone who is considering getting private coaching from me?

So I'd say if you want to invest in something that is going to give you value throughout your lifetime, it's never going to expire and it's going to just make pretty much every aspect of your life better. I'd say invest into charisma, public speaking, that sort of stuff. And from what my experience with like Jeff's course, I'd say that Jeff's definitely helped me with that. So I'd say if you're debating it, if you're looking to investing into yourself, right into your future, definitely look into the course.

I love it. Well, Phil, thank you so much for hopping on doing this case study. I've enjoyed having you as a client immensely.
