Doug uses coaching to help him communicate better at work and in his personal life

Case Study Summary

Doug, a software product owner, wanted coaching to become more influential in conversations and better guide discussions toward his goals. The biggest shift came from realizing that everyone is the star of their own movie—they want to be heard. With this newmindset, Doug felt more confident, built stronger rapport with colleagues, and made conversations more engaging, even in virtual settings.

A standout moment was a spontaneous airport chat where open-ended questions sparked a genuinely enjoyable conversation. Doug calls coaching a small investment with a huge return, offering tools and insights that make a daily difference.

Hey Doug, thanks for doing a case study with me. First off, tell everyone who you are and what you do.

Hey Jeff, my name is Doug and I am a software product owner.

What was the biggest reason you wanted coaching? What did you hope to learn? Well, I was hoping to just be on calls with colleagues in a professional setting and just be much more influential towards them and serve the direction I was hoping to persuade them.

What was the most important thing you learned with coaching?

Well, I thought it was most insightful to think about my interactions with people more externally and have the mindset that everyone's the star of their own movie and they want to be heard. And if I can get in that mindset, everything else is going to fall into place.

Talk a little bit about how life is different after coaching, what wins can you share with us?

Well, I feel more confident in that I'm bringing my 50% of the conversation in the right way to interaction and yeah, I just feel more comfortable with people and talking with people and knowing that what I'm doing is more likely going to have the outcomes I'm looking for.

I would say examples, maybe, you know, feeling like I'm building a little more rapport with work colleagues, which is hard because I work virtually. Also, just, you know, a couple examples like the one I told you earlier about meeting some folks in the airport and asking, you know, asking them to tell me more about their vacation and them just light up, you know, my approach to asking them questions about themselves really helped light up the conversation more than I ever had in the past.

How is that different from how would 'past you' have handled that, do you think?

In the past, I would have probably asked probing specific questions that were more targeted of what I would want to learn about where they went on vacation. Instead, I let them take control of the conversation and tell me what they wanted to tell me. And they just really were, you know, because it was an open-ended question, they were just more excited about it. You know, I could still guide the conversation a little bit and find out what I want to know, but it really facilitated conversation and a relationship there. We definitely fit high more after that in the course of the flight and getting off the plane, I think, than we would have otherwise.

I love it. That's awesome. What would you tell someone who is considering getting private coaching from me?

I'd say that, you know, in the grand scheme of things, it's a relatively small investment for mindset and framework and tools that can really impact every day and make a huge difference in the long run.

So it's well worth it.

Well, Doug, thank you so much for doing this case study with me.
